Mercurial Moments – What’s Your Story?

13

I found that whenever I shared my story others would tell me theirs. It’s as though my story inspires others to recall their fond memories.

Stories are fun, vital and good for business too, so I hope my story reminds you of something that happened in your happy past. I would love to hear your story – via the comments box.

When my parents moved north to Newcastle I was twelve and instinctively I knew I needed to get out there and make new friends. What could I do? make? or be? what would attract people to me and make me likeable?

Being mad keen on electronics and a boys boy, I made a ‘morse code’ machine (even though I could only ‘do’ SOS). Low and behold, the same day, I had people knocking on my door.

From creating something new and putting out a few simple messages I discovered people would come to me. What I learned back then has stayed with me always. I have discovered that every time I tell this story, others tell me of things that happened to them in their formative years, which has always been interesting. I hope that you are inspired by my short story to recall your story.

At the end I run through all the things that I learned – there were about 10 things from this one event. I hope, if you listen in, that it sparks off some fresh perspectives on some or just one of the things that you did when you were younger that helped form who you are today.

Please leave a comment and share with me your formative story that you now see as a stepping stone to who you are today.

Recently: I made a shocking discovery

I’m going to share a short story with you that is pretty embarrassing…

I wasn’t always a best selling author…
And I wasn’t always a guy you would expect to see on the front cover of a book…

People misunderstood what I said and did. So I asked them to clarify the picture

One of the people I asked was adrian swinscoe, author of rare business

Adrian surprised me with a namecheck when he wrote about the benefits of asking such questions on his blog

Adrian asked the same questions of his audience, and, as a result, suggested that this is an exercise that everyone should undertake.

He discovered:

What was heard from what was said was different from what was understood…

Would you like to ask those questions?

Well now you can…

I wrote out the questions
Every business should ask

From feedback received, you might be thinking this is not for me, this will not work in my business.

Well, they keep getting done because they do work. The harsh reality is that the more people there are who cannot translate these ideas into working business models, then the more opportunity there is for those who stretch themselves beyond their comfort zone and put the pieces together, complete the picture and translate into action steps.

There’s still a few days to go before Halloween, consider this a dry run for Christmas – You have been warned… Spooky!
